Livermore’s Centennial Bulb Still Burning After 116 Years

Burning since 1901, the Centennial Bulb has earned the Guinness Book of World Records blessing as the world’s longest burning lightbulb. Since leaving the Shelby Electric Company 115 years ago, this extraordinary bulb has been covered by everyone from CBS, ABC and PBS, to The BBC. Usually considered a prime example of quality construction, the bulb is now used to argue against corporate greed and planned obsolescence. The bulb’s unusually thick filament is usually listed as the reason for its longevity.

These days, the light shines securely inside Fire Station #6 in Livermore, CA. Its caretakers are the brave members of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. Their foundation, the LPFF, raises money to help fallen firefighters, police, EMS personnel, and their families. The LPFF is also committed to the future of the fire service with scholarships for individuals who express the will and desire to carry on in the proud tradition of public service.

This year, the LPFF chose to fundraise by creating a limited edition t-shirt. Show your support for this historic treasure and the LPFF!
